Earth Day 2021

4/27/2021

To celebrate Earth Day 2021, our high school prep students (6th-8th graders) went to Wilson Park in Portage Park to clean up the trash and leaves around the park. Once they arrived, they divided into groups of five and spread out around the park. Students either weeded the garden, picked up trash, or raked leaves. It was a nice day to be outside and the students enjoyed making the park beautiful!

Thank you to the Wilson Park staff for overseeing the event as well as for teaching our students how to use the various tools! They had a fun time at this outing!

Pursuing His Dreams

Kieran Pavlat appreciates how his education at St. John’s prepared him for high school and beyond.

Kieran (class of 2017) believes that St. John’s 6th through 8th grade high school prep program set him up for success in high school. As a student at St. John’s, Kieran experienced what it would be like in high school by switching classrooms and learning time management skills. As a current senior at  St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Kieran is thriving. He's thankful for the new friendships he’s formed as well as the teachers who inspire him everyday. Kieran especially enjoys his art and music classes and loves his teachers in these subjects.

Kieran fondly remembers the eight years he spent as a student at St. John’s. Although there were many wonderful moments throughout the years, one of his favorite memories was being a part of the first St. John’s boys’ volleyball team to make it to the state tournament in 8th grade. When he looks back on this memory, Kieran states, “This was a historic and extremely special moment for the school, Mrs. Rocans [the coach], the boys' volleyball team, and our parents.”

One of Kieran’s biggest accomplishments since graduating from St. John's has been achieving his dream of becoming an Eagle Scout. Scouts has provided a wonderful community for Kieran, and he is proud of the work he put towards obtaining the highest rank in Boy Scouts. He states, “Becoming an Eagle Scout is not easy. It took many years to complete the requirements and a lot of hard work and dedication.” Kieran’s work ethic and determination paid off, and he is now enjoying his new role as an Eagle Scout.

In regards to the future, Kieran plans on attending Concordia University Chicago where he'll study physical therapy. His interest in this field began when he worked alongside his high school athletic trainer. After this enjoyable experience, Kieran began considering a career as a physical therapist. In addition, he's had to go through physical therapy himself for a shoulder injury. During this experience, Kieran learned more about the field and his passion grew. Kieran is thankful for the help he received in physical therapy and he hopes to help others in the same way in the future.

We are excited to see where Kieran's determination and passions take him in life! Thank you, Kieran, for sharing your story!
