Meet Mrs. Yamate, our 4th grade teacher!
~Why did you decide to become a teacher?
"I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 11 years old, in 5th grade at St. John's. And I have felt called to be a Lutheran teacher since I was 12, in 6th grade at St. John's. I wanted to help children love to learn and feel safe at school, just like my teachers helped me love to learn and helped me feel safe. And teach kids to find books that they love! I also wanted to teach them in a Christ-centered way by sharing the Gospel with them using my words and actions."
~What do you like about teaching 4th grade?
"Every grade has its blessings, but I love teaching 4th grade because the students are starting to use their literacy skills to learn about the world God made. And I love that so much of our curriculum is focused on the earth and how we can take care of it. Plus, learning how to conquer long division is so much fun! I also love that the students are really becoming the people God created them to be!"
~What is something you love about St. John's?
"I love so much about St. John's, but being able to serve alongside such talented (yet humble) educators inspires me daily. I am so blessed to work with the faculty and staff here."
~What do you like to do in your free time?
"As you can probably guess, I love to read in my free time: novels, magazines, professional development texts, you name it! I also enjoy making a variety of paper crafts such as cards and gift bags. Spending time with friends and family is something I cherish as well."
~Do you have a favorite book?
"This is a very difficult question! My favorite young adult titles are Ella Enchanted and The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. As an adult, I really enjoyed Team of Rivals, Team Five and All the Light We Cannot See. I love books related to history and art."
~What is something that might surprise us about you?
"I sell some of the paper crafts I create, I'm a big fan of Abraham Lincoln, and I just joined the Women's Board of the Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicagoland in Glenview.
